Zollverein Colliery – revolutionary technology for a World Heritage Site

S4 was the last of six chimneys to be refurbished at the Zollverein Colliery UNESCO World Heritage Site and therefore was the only one to benefit from the latest pioneering achievements in building materials technology.

This was because for the first time anywhere, the chimney refurbishment works used the new sulphate-resistant S-FM pointing mortar from quick-mix, Sievert SE’s premium brand for premixed dry mortar. The mortar uses the revolutionary, new, patented SECON binder technology, which has been proved to protect against efflorescence and leaching from the pointing mortar. SECON stands for the three attributes secure, ecological and economic. So the new S-FM pointing mortar was the perfect material for specialist contractor Mende Schornsteinbau GmbH & Co. KG from Lastrup in northern Germany, which was appointed to carry out the refurbishment work.
