Trinity Church, Hainichen

Special pointing to sloping brick surfaces at Trinity Church in Hainichen.

Trinity Church in Hainichen has an unusual clay brick façade: Many areas of facing brickwork on the outer walls feature sloping surfaces. In order to withstand the greater demands of slowly draining rainwater or snow that adheres to the inclined surfaces, these areas were finished with vitrified bricks. However, the glaze proved to be a weakness that gradually led to the breakdown of the bond between the pointing mortar and the bricks themselves. After 115 years, it was high time for a thorough refurbishment of the brickwork and its joints.
